Isaiah’s Vision

In the year of (A)King Uzziah’s death (B)I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, lofty and exalted, with the train of His robe filling the temple. Seraphim were standing above Him, (C)each having six wings: with two each covered his face, and with two each covered his feet, and with two each flew. And one called out to another and said,

(D)Holy, Holy, Holy, is the Lord of armies.
The [a](E)whole earth is full of His glory.”

And the [b]foundations of the thresholds trembled at the voice of him who called out, while the [c](F)temple was filling with smoke. Then I said,

(G)Woe to me, for I am ruined!
Because I am a man of (H)unclean lips,
And I live among a (I)people of unclean lips;
For my eyes have seen the (J)King, the Lord of armies.”

Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a burning coal in his hand, which he had taken from the (K)altar with tongs. He (L)touched my mouth with it and said, “Behold, this has touched your lips; and (M)your guilt is taken away and atonement is made for your sin.”

Isaiah’s Commission

Then I heard the (N)voice of the Lord, saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?” Then (O)I said, “Here am I. Send me!” And He said, “Go, and tell this people:

‘Keep on (P)listening, but do not understand;
And keep on looking, but do not gain knowledge.’
10 (Q)Make the hearts of this people [d](R)insensitive,
Their ears [e]dull,
And their eyes [f]blind,
(S)So that they will not see with their eyes,
Hear with their ears,
Understand with their hearts,
And return and be healed.”

11 Then I said, “Lord, (T)how long?” And He answered,

“Until (U)cities are devastated and without inhabitant,
Houses are without people
And the land is utterly desolate,
12 The Lord has (V)completely removed people,
And there [g]are many (W)forsaken places in the midst of the land.
13 Yet there will still be a tenth portion in it,
And it will again be subject to burning,
Like a terebinth or an (X)oak
Whose stump remains when it is cut down.
The (Y)holy seed is its stump.”

21 (A)They *went into Capernaum; and immediately on the Sabbath Jesus (B)entered the synagogue and began to teach. 22 And (C)they were amazed at His teaching; for He was teaching them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. 23 Just then there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit; and he cried out, 24 saying, “(D)What [a]business do you have with us, Jesus [b]of (E)Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are: (F)the Holy One of God!” 25 And Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be quiet, and come out of him!” 26 After throwing him into convulsions and crying out with a loud voice, the unclean spirit came out of him. 27 And they were all (G)amazed, so they debated among themselves, saying, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him.” 28 Immediately the news about Him spread everywhere into all the surrounding region of Galilee.

Crowds Healed

29 (H)And immediately after they left (I)the synagogue, they entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with [c]James and John. 30 Now Simon’s mother-in-law was lying sick with a fever; and they immediately *spoke to [d]Jesus about her. 31 And He came to her and raised her up, taking her by the hand, and the fever left her, and she served them.

32 Now (J)when evening came, (K)after the sun had set, they began bringing to Him all who were ill and those who were (L)demon-possessed. 33 And the whole (M)city had gathered at the door. 34 And He (N)healed many who were ill with various diseases, and cast out many demons; and He would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew [e]who He was.

35 (O)And in the early morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house, and went away to a secluded place, and (P)prayed there for a time. 36 Simon and his companions eagerly searched for Him; 37 and they found Him and *said to Him, “Everyone is looking for You.” 38 He *said to them, “Let’s go somewhere else to the towns nearby, so that I may also [f]preach there; for this is why I came.” 39 (Q)And He went into their synagogues [g]preaching throughout Galilee, and casting out the demons.

40 (R)And a man with [h]leprosy *came to [i]Jesus, imploring Him and (S)kneeling down, and saying to Him, “If You are willing, You can make me clean.” 41 Moved with compassion, Jesus reached out with His hand and touched him, and *said to him, “I am willing; be cleansed.” 42 And immediately the leprosy left him, and he was cleansed. 43 And He sternly warned him and immediately sent him away, 44 and He *said to him, (T)See that you say nothing to anyone; but (U)go, show yourself to the priest and (V)offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.” 45 But he went out and began to (W)proclaim it [j]freely and to (X)spread the news around, to such an extent that [k]Jesus could no longer publicly enter a city, but [l]stayed out in unpopulated areas; and (Y)they were coming to Him from everywhere.

16 (A)Bind up the testimony, (B)seal the [a]Law among (C)my disciples. 17 And I will (D)wait for the Lord (E)who is hiding His face from the house of Jacob; I will wait eagerly for Him. 18 (F)Behold, I and the children whom the Lord has given me are for (G)signs and wonders in Israel from the Lord of armies, who (H)dwells on Mount Zion.

19 When they say to you, “(I)Consult the mediums and the spiritists who whisper and mutter,” should a people not (J)consult their God? Should they (K)consult the dead in behalf of the living? 20 To the [b](L)Law and to the testimony! If they do not speak in accordance with this word, it is because (M)they have no dawn. 21 They will pass through [c]the land (N)dejected and hungry, and it will turn out that when they are hungry, they will become enraged and curse [d]their king and their God as they face upward. 22 Then they will (O)look to the earth, and behold, distress and darkness, the gloom of anguish; and they will be (P)driven away into darkness.

Birth and Reign of the Prince of Peace

[e]But there will be no more (Q)gloom for her who was in anguish. In earlier times He (R)treated the (S)land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali with contempt, but later on He will make it glorious, by the way of the sea, on the other side of the Jordan, Galilee of the [f]Gentiles.

[g](T)The people who walk in darkness
Will see a great light;
Those who live in a dark land,
The light will shine on them.
(U)You will multiply the nation,
You (V)will [h]increase [i]their joy;
They will rejoice in Your presence
As with the joy [j]of harvest,
As people (W)rejoice when they divide the spoils.
For (X)You will break the yoke of their burden and the staff on their shoulders,
The rod of their (Y)oppressor, as [k]at the battle of (Z)Midian.
For every boot of the marching warrior in the roar of battle,
And cloak rolled in blood, will be for burning, fuel for the fire.
For a (AA)Child will be born to us, a (AB)Son will be given to us;
And the (AC)government will [l]rest (AD)on His shoulders;
And His name will be called (AE)Wonderful Counselor, (AF)Mighty God,
Eternal (AG)Father, Prince of (AH)Peace.
There will be (AI)no end to the increase of His government or of peace
On the (AJ)throne of David and over [m]his kingdom,
To establish it and to uphold it with (AK)justice and righteousness
From then on and forevermore.
(AL)The zeal of the Lord of armies will accomplish this.

An Interlude

After this I saw (A)four angels standing at the (B)four corners of the earth, holding back (C)the four winds of the earth (D)so that no wind would blow on the earth, or on the sea, or on any tree. And I saw another angel ascending (E)from the rising of the sun, holding the (F)seal of (G)the living God; and he called out with a loud voice to the (H)four angels to whom it was granted to harm the earth and the sea, saying, “(I)Do not harm the earth, or the sea, or the trees until we have (J)sealed the bond-servants of our God on their (K)foreheads.”

The 144,000

And I heard the (L)number of those who were sealed: (M)144,000, sealed from every tribe of the sons of Israel:

from the tribe of Judah, twelve thousand were sealed, from the tribe of Reuben twelve thousand, from the tribe of Gad twelve thousand, from the tribe of Asher twelve thousand, from the tribe of Naphtali twelve thousand, from the tribe of Manasseh twelve thousand, from the tribe of Simeon twelve thousand, from the tribe of Levi twelve thousand, from the tribe of Issachar twelve thousand, from the tribe of Zebulun twelve thousand, from the tribe of Joseph twelve thousand, and from the tribe of Benjamin, twelve thousand were sealed.

A Multitude from the Tribulation

After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one could count, from (N)every nation and all the tribes, peoples, and languages, standing (O)before the throne and (P)before the Lamb, clothed in (Q)white robes, and (R)palm branches were in their hands; 10 and they *cried out with a loud voice, saying,

(S)Salvation belongs to our God (T)who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb.”

11 And all the angels were standing (U)around the throne and around (V)the elders and the (W)four living creatures; and they (X)fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, 12 saying,

(Y)Amen, (Z)blessing, glory, wisdom, thanksgiving, honor, power, and might belong to our God forever and ever. (AA)Amen.”

13 Then one of the elders (AB)responded, saying to me, “These who are clothed in the (AC)white robes, who are they, and where have they come from?” 14 I [a]said to him, “My lord, you know.” And he said to me, “These are the ones who come out of the (AD)great tribulation, and they have (AE)washed their robes and made them (AF)white in the (AG)blood of the Lamb. 15 For this reason they are (AH)before the throne of God, and they (AI)serve Him day and night in His [b](AJ)temple; and (AK)He who sits on the throne will spread His (AL)tabernacle over them. 16 (AM)They will no longer hunger nor thirst, nor will the sun [c]beat down on them, nor any scorching heat; 17 for the Lamb in the center of the throne will be their (AN)shepherd, and will guide them to springs of the [d](AO)water of life; and (AP)God will wipe every tear from their eyes.”
